Products & Configurations

  • What Farm from a Box products are available?

Farm from a Box offers a modular suite of solar-powered infrastructure solutions designed to support outdoor, soil-grown agriculture.

    Our current product configurations include:

Solar Cold Storage for off-grid or grid-supported produce cooling and storage.

Full Farm Unit for integrated farm support, including solar cold storage, water systems, and irrigation infrastructure.

MCS Mobile Solar Cold Storage for mobile cooling, harvest support, and produce transport.

Each configuration is designed to help farms and food system projects choose the level of infrastructure that best fits their needs.

  • What is the Solar Cold Storage unit?

The Solar Cold Storage unit provides reliable, solar-powered cold storage for harvested produce, helping farmers protect crop quality, reduce post-harvest loss, extend shelf life, and improve access to markets.

Because cold storage can require significant and costly power loads, our system is designed to make cold chain infrastructure more accessible by pairing efficient cooling with renewable energy. This helps growers reduce dependence on expensive grid power or fuel-based alternatives while keeping produce fresher for longer.

This configuration is ideal for farms, food hubs, schools, land trusts, and community food projects that need practical, lower-operating-cost cold storage without taking on a full farm system.

  • What is included in the Full Farm Unit?

Absolutely, and we encourage you to. When we configure your unit, just let us know if you plan to incorporate an orchard and we will build your irrigation system to support it.

  • What is the MCS Mobile Solar Cold Storage trailer?

No, there is no organic material included in the Box. Because our system can support any type of crop, the selection of seeds you’ll need depends entirely on what you want to grow.

  • How do I know which configuration is right for my project?

Site Fit, Installation

& Support

  • What makes a site a good fit for Farm from a Box?

Farm from a Box is designed for new and existing outdoor growing operations that need practical infrastructure to improve production, cooling, water management, and farm resilience.

The system can be especially valuable for farms facing high heat, drought pressure, limited grid access, seasonal production challenges, or the need for more affordable cold storage. By combining solar-powered cooling, water and irrigation support, and field-ready infrastructure, Farm from a Box helps growers protect crop quality, reduce loss, extend harvest value, and manage more confidently through changing conditions.

The right fit depends on your site, crop plan, acreage, water access, energy needs, and operational goals. Our team helps assess these factors and recommend the configuration that best supports your farm or project.

  • What crops can Farm from a Box support?

Farm from a Box can support a wide range of outdoor, soil-grown crops by providing the practical infrastructure needed for irrigation, field operations, post-harvest cooling, and crop handling.

While the system can be configured for many types of production, we specialize in high-value specialty crops such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, and other crops where reliable water management, harvest quality, cold storage, and market access can have a major impact on farm revenue.

Farm from a Box does not determine what farmers grow. Instead, it supports the infrastructure around production, helping growers improve efficiency, protect crop quality, reduce loss, and manage crops more effectively based on their climate, soil, market, and farm plan.

  • Can Farm from a Box be used on leased land?

Yes. Farm from a Box can be a strong fit for leased land because the system is modular and designed to reduce the need for permanent infrastructure.

For growers, land trusts, schools, developers, and project partners working with leased or transitional land, Farm from a Box can provide flexible infrastructure that supports production, cooling, water access, and farm operations without requiring the same level of fixed buildout as traditional farm facilities.

The final fit depends on your lease terms, site access, permitting requirements, and installation needs.

  • What site preparation is required?

Site preparation depends on the product configuration and where the system will be used.

For Solar Cold Storage, the unit can be placed in a range of accessible locations, including a farm field, packing area, food hub, school campus, community site, or even a parking lot, as long as there is appropriate space, access, placement, and solar exposure. This makes it a flexible option for customers who need cold storage near production, aggregation, or distribution points.

The Full Farm Unit is designed specifically for in-field use because it supports active outdoor production through water, irrigation, cooling, and field-ready infrastructure. For this configuration, site planning typically includes field layout, water access or storage, irrigation design, drainage, sun exposure, and proximity to the growing area.

For the MCS Mobile Solar Cold Storage unit, site preparation is more flexible and focuses on mobility, access, trailer compatibility, safe placement, and cooling needs.

Our team helps assess your site during the planning process so the system is configured for your location, use case, and operational goals.

  • What if there is no power access on my land?

Farm from a Box is designed for sites where grid power is unavailable, unreliable, or expensive. Our solar-powered systems include robust energy storage to support critical farm infrastructure, including cold storage and other system components, depending on the configuration and site conditions.

Because cold storage can require significant power, integrating renewable energy helps make cooling more accessible and can dramatically lower operating costs compared to relying solely on grid power or fuel-based alternatives.

For sites with grid access, the system can be designed as a hybrid grid-tied solution, allowing customers to use renewable energy to offset electricity costs, while maintaining grid connectivity when needed. For added redundancy, the system can also be configured with a generator backup to support reliable operation during extended outages or changing site conditions.

During planning, we assess your energy needs, solar exposure, backup requirements, and product configuration to determine the best fit for your site.

  • How does setup and deployment work?

Farm from a Box manages setup of the core system, including the unit, solar power, cold storage, water components, and integrated infrastructure. Our team is on-site to install, test, and make sure the system is operating properly before handoff.

For Full Farm Unit projects, we provide guidance on connecting to the available water access point, but we do not install pumping systems. The farmer or site team is responsible for laying out irrigation lines in the field based on the crop plan and layout, with training and guidance from Farm from a Box.

Before completion, we walk your team through basic operations so you feel confident using and maintaining the system.
